Moyes Lures
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA — ACTIVE YEARS EARLY 1980s – PRESENT
Andrew "Andy" Moyes is one of the most respected names in big-game lure design — and living proof that the Hawaiian influence reaches far beyond Hawaii. Born in Freeport, Bahamas to British parents (his father ran sportfishing boats, including a Rybovich out of Montauk), Andy grew up in Fort Lauderdale and started building lures as a 13-year-old prodigy in 1983, long before he ever caught a blue marlin. His first inspiration came straight from magazine ads for Bart Miller's lures and the old-time Hawaiian makers — he simply liked the way their work looked.
About five years in, he set lure-making aside; the casting resin and sanding dust were brutally toxic. Instead he spent years modifying other makers' lures — drilling them, re-weighting them, adding lead keels so they'd run exactly the way he wanted and hold his hook where he wanted it. That obsessive tuning, sharpened over decades fishing the world's best marlin grounds (and dominating the Bahamas Billfish Championship in the 1990s aboard the No. 1 Deal), became the foundation of his own line when he returned to building from scratch.
Today Moyes makes fully custom lures and teasers by hand in a modest Fort Lauderdale shop, working alone — roughly thirty models ranging from five-inch tuna baits to twenty-inch-plus teasers, all with handmade eyes and custom skirts. His VI Express (original color black-and-green, which he calls "the color of money") and shapes like the Kaiwi, Sumo, Argus, and Boogeyman have produced grander marlin and major tournament wins — his small Kaiwi famously took Steph Choate's 1,018-pound Mozambique blue, prompting his line that "elephants really do eat peanuts." In 2023 the IGFA honored him with the Gilbert Keech Heavy Tackle Award for the impact of his lures and teasers on the sport, and he's among a handful of anglers ever to land a 1,500-pound-plus giant bluefin.
As a museum and archive, we're honored to document the work of Andy Moyes, whose custom lures carry the Hawaiian influence onto blue water worldwide.
Notable shapes: VI Express, Kaiwi, Sumo (teaser), Argus, Boogeyman; ~30 models from 5" tuna baits to 20"+ teasers
