Tetsuo
HONOLULU, OAHU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 2019 – PRESENT
Tetsuo Lures may be the most unusual entry in this entire archive — because Dan Harano doesn't pour resin, he fires ceramic. A high school ceramics teacher with a BFA from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and an MFA from the University of California, Davis, Harano is a one-man operation who brought a fine-art ceramicist's skill to big-game lure making.
His "new age" lures are made from durable vitrified ceramic refractory — keel-weighted, realistic, and built to last a lifetime. The original Tetsuo, the one that started it all, is a black head glazed with a hint of navy, its iridescent shimmer mimicking the color of baitfish and proving irresistible to predators (and fishermen). Each lure is made by hand, one at a time, so every piece is genuinely unique — a fresh material in a tradition long defined by resin.
As a museum and archive, we're honored to document Dan Harano and Tetsuo Lures, whose ceramic heads bring a wholly original material to the Hawaiian tradition.
Notable shapes: Black (the original), Black Pearl; keel-weighted ceramic trolling heads
Identification tips:
- The defining feature is the material — glazed, vitrified ceramic rather than resin
- Iridescent glazes, keel-weighted, each hand-made and slightly unique in size/weight
- "Tetsuo Lures" branding; a modern maker
