Stan Ho

OAHU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 1960s – 2010/2014 (family business "Ho and Sons"; father Winfred Ho)

The Hos were a father-and-son Oʻahu lure-making team — Winfred Ho and his son, Stanford "Stan" Ho — working under the family business "Ho and Sons" (the kanji stamped on their lures, 何, reads exactly that). They produced vintage Hawaiian trolling lures across the classic era, and Winfred's early work in particular is mentioned in the same breath as Chester Kaita and Joe Yee, with collectible pieces valued well into the hundreds of dollars.

What makes the Ho name especially significant is its direct tie to one of Oʻahu's founding scoop makers, Johnny Abreu. Winfred and Stan made a line they called "Abrey" — an open homage to Abreu — built around his signature fish-head insert and his scoop shape. In doing so, the Hos helped carry the Abreu fat-boy fish-head tradition forward into the next generation, and genuine examples surface today marked with the Abreu logo (vintage 12-inch Ho scoops stamped "Abreu" among them). It's a clear, deliberate thread running from the founding generation of Honolulu scoop makers into the era that followed.

Beyond the Abrey scoops, the Hos made shell bullets and other classic Oʻahu shapes. Their output is firmly vintage now and prized by collectors who recognize both the "Ho and Sons" kanji and the Abreu-tribute lineage.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to document the Ho family — Winfred and Stan — and the way their Abrey line carried Johnny Abreu's fish-head tradition forward.

Notable shapes: "Abrey" fish-head scoops (homage to Johnny Abreu — his fish-head insert and shape), 12" Abreu-logo scoops, shell bullets (a Winfred Ho signature)

Identification tips:

  • The "Ho and Sons" kanji (何) stamped on a lure is the family maker's mark
  • The "Abrey" / Abreu logo, paired with Abreu's signature fish-head insert and scoop shape, marks the homage line
