Pakula

GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA — ACTIVE YEARS c. 1969 – PRESENT

Peter Pakula is proof that the Hawaiian lure tradition went global — and then circled back. An Australian who grew up fishing the harbor and wharfs of Sydney's eastern suburbs, he trained in textile design and spent his early career in the garment trade, work that taught him fibers, dyes, hydrodynamics, and how to run a manufacturing business — an unlikely but perfect foundation for lure-making. He built his first Witchdoctor teaser at age 14 in 1969 (originally a wooden trout downrigger), began developing a line of trolling lures in the mid-1970s, and tinkered on night shifts until his then-girlfriend — now wife and business partner, Jo — pushed him to turn it into a real business.

Here's the Hawaiian twist: Pakula's lures first built their reputation not in Australia but in Hawaii. In the early 1980s he was quietly making lures for Hawaiian and Californian anglers who were winning tournaments with them, and for years Australians who bought "great Hawaiian lures made by a guy with my name" didn't believe they were his. His breakout came at the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Tournament, where a Pakula Original Sprocket took a then-Australian-record 540-pound blue, and the brand's global reputation was sealed when his lures won the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in 1996 — with many assuming they were Hawaiian-made.

Pakula became a relentless innovator and one of the largest independent lure makers in the world. He pioneered Lumo (luminescent) and UV additives in lures — Lumo is a Pakula trademark — and in 1997 was the first to mold lures from super-tough clear polyurethane (his Softease and Diamond Heads). His cup-faced, reverse-tapered Lumo Sprocket, designed to swim in the rough seas off Sydney, became a phenomenon — ranked third on Marlin's Top Ten Lures of All Time — and his Witchdoctor teaser, Paua Hothead Mosquito, and Evil Animal are staples in spreads worldwide. As much a teacher as a maker, he shares rigging and technique freely through seminars, videos, and live chat, and in 2018 he and Jo were inducted into the Australian Lure, Fly and Outdoors Expo Hall of Fame.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to document Peter Pakula, whose Hawaiian-inspired lures conquered the world and were so good that fishermen assumed they were made in Hawaii.
