Kamisugi

OAHU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 2005 – 2015

Kamisugi lures were made by Cully Kamisugi on Oʻahu from 2005 to 2015 — and the work was so far ahead of its time that, judged by today's standards two decades on, it still reads as next level. His attention to detail was extraordinary: the folded, cut-out inserts that became his hallmark took multiple hours apiece, and he was crafting origami-style tape fish-head inserts twenty years ago, entirely by hand, long before a Cricut or any cutting machine existed to do that kind of precision work. Each lure was, in effect, a small feat of patience and handcraft.

He stopped making lures when the chemicals involved in the work began affecting his health — an occupational hazard well known among makers who pour resin by hand. With a defined, decade-long run and that level of labor in every piece, his lures are a finite and genuinely special body of work, treasured by those who have them.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to document Cully Kamisugi — a maker whose hand-cut, folded insert work was ahead of its time and remains next level today.
