Jojan

OAHU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 1970s – 1980s

Jojan was the lure line of Larry Akana, an Oʻahu maker of the sampan era. He made old-style Kona scoops — close cousins in look to Chester Kaita's classic scoops — built for the slow trolling speeds of the "haole" and sampan boats that worked Hawaiian waters in those decades. Larry Akana has since passed away, and his scoops are a piece of that founding era of Hawaiian lure making.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to preserve the memory of Larry Akana and Jojan, whose scoops belong to the foundational sampan era of Hawaiian trolling.

Notable shapes: Old-style Kona scoops (sampan-speed), in the look of Chester Kaita's scoops

Identification tips:

  • "Jojan" / Larry Akana (Oʻahu); large old-school scoop heads resembling Chester Kaita's
  • Built for slow trolling behind haole and sampan boats — a 1970s–80s vintage
