Hawaiian Malolo

HONOLULU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 2020 – PRESENT (founders' lure-making careers span decades)

Hawaiian Malolo is a different kind of entry — not a lure-head maker but a specialist in bird teasers, the winged surface attractors that add splash, visibility, and action to a spread. Founded in 2020 by Greg Moss and Kydd Pollock, the company set out to build a better bird: one that imitates the malolo (flying fish), a top pelagic food source, closely enough to fool even finicky fish.

The two founders bring deep résumés. Greg Moss, born and raised in Hawaii, landed his first pelagic fish at age 12, has fished commercially in Hawaii and Alaska, guides saltwater fly trips, is a masterful fly tyer, and has been making pelagic trolling lures for more than 45 years with a meticulous eye for detail. Kydd Pollock grew up working on his father's long-range charter vessel in New Zealand, became the youngest licensed boat captain in the country at 18, has held national and IGFA world records, and carries degrees in marine science and biology.

The Hawaiian Malolo bird is hand-crafted from tough urethane resin and polycarbonate, rigged on heavy stainless cable, and tuned to ride upright and flutter side to side on its wings without diving, even in wind. It earned its reputation fast: Capt. Bonze Fleet was slaying fish with Hawaiian Malolos behind his Weapon lures in the Azores, and word spread from there. Run a 6- to 9-inch bullet behind one, and the bird does the rest.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to document Greg Moss, Kydd Pollock, and Hawaiian Malolo Bird Teasers, a fresh take on the flying-fish teaser.

Notable shapes: The Hawaiian Malolo flying-fish bird teaser (color patterns include Feathersword and Pacific Thunder); ~6.25" long, 7.25" wingspan, ~3 oz

Identification tips:

  • It's a bird teaser, not a lure head — a flying-fish imitation that rides upright and flutters on its wings
  • Tough urethane/polycarbonate build on heavy stainless cable; "Hawaiian Malolo" branding
  • Best run in the long-rigger or stinger/shotgun position with a small bullet trailing
