D. ODAGIRI

HONOLULU, HAWAII — ACTIVE YEARS 1970s – PRESENT

Dennis Odagiri is a quietly pivotal figure in the craft — the maker widely credited with pioneering the fish-head insert in Hawaiian trolling lures. Working out of Honolulu, he developed a way to build lifelike fish imagery into a lure's head, an innovation that rippled outward through the entire tradition and helped set the stage for the realism later makers would chase.

His influence runs straight through the biggest names. By multiple accounts, Odagiri taught Joe Yee the fish-head insert technique — no small footnote, given Yee's stature — and a later generation points back to him as a master: Garrett Lee of Tsutomu names Odagiri among his inspirations and marvels at the quality of his work. For a maker whose fingerprints are on so much of what followed, he remains remarkably under-documented, which is exactly why preserving his story matters.

Odagiri's lures — scoops, slants, and jetted scoops built around his fish-head inserts — are prized by collectors and recognizable by their craftsmanship and his distinctive skirt post, even though many left the shop unlabeled.

As a museum and archive, we're honored to document the work of Dennis Odagiri, the maker who brought the fish-head insert into the Hawaiian tradition.

Notable shapes: Fish-head-insert scoops and slants, 12" scoop, jetted scoop, light-tackle slants

Identification tips:

  • The fish-head insert is his signature contribution; look for his distinctive skirt post
  • Frequently unlabeled — ID leans on style and construction
  • Collector-grade and increasingly valuable; confirm significant pieces through provenance
  • His most famous lure is the 9" "Smoker" which is a jetted tapered scoop, which has been the inspiration for Sh-Bite's Smoker shape as well.

Below, you’ll find our ever-growing digital archive showcasing every lure that has come through our shop. This collection is constantly evolving as new lures arrive, making it a living record of rare, limited-production lures. We will continue updating this database regularly, building what we aim to be the largest digital archive of offshore trolling lures in the world.
